Singapore is set to overtake Las Vegas as the world’s second-largest gambling hub this year, a US gaming industry head said Tuesday, as Asia cements its place as a major betting market.

Singapore has emerged as Asia’s hottest new gambling destination with a revamped cityscape and billions of dollars pouring into the economy, after the opening of two resort casinos in 2010.

The strong growth came after Macau overtook the Las Vegas Strip as the world’s biggest gaming hub in 2006 and now boasts a gaming market almost four times as large as that of Vegas, thanks to burgeoning numbers of wealthy Asians.

The two resort casinos in Singapore posted $5.1 billion in gaming revenues in 2010, a figure forecast to rise to $6.4 billion this year, according to Frank Fahrenkopf, president of the American Gaming Association.

A report citing research by the Royal Bank of Scotland has suggested Las Vegas will take $6.2 billion this year.

“Now more than a year old, the two integrated resorts in Singapore have exceeded all expectations and turned the nation into Asia’s second global gaming superpower,” said Fahrenkopf.

“The country’s gaming market will likely overtake Las Vegas as the world’s second-largest gaming center as early as this year,” he told a news conference on the sidelines of the Global Gaming Expo Asia, which opened Tuesday in Macau.

The first Singapore casino opened in Malaysian-controlled Resorts World Sentosa in February 2010, with US-based Las Vegas Sands following two months later as the world economy was still clawing itself out of recession.

Asia’s strong growth in the gaming industry stands in sharp contrast to US venues such as the Las Vegas Strip, previously a byword for gambling but which is now suffering the effects of the global downturn.

The Sahara, an iconic Las Vegas hotel that once hosted names such as Elvis Presley, Jerry Lewis, Frank Sinatra and the Beatles, closed its doors last month, even as many Asian casinos are planning expansions.

Fahrenkopf said the potential in other Asian countries would also help spur growth, with several multibillion-dollar casino development projects due for completion over the next two years.

“Other developments in Asia are helping to clearly establish the region as the hottest gaming market in the world,” he said, noting the sector is expanding at record levels in Cambodia and Laos, while Sri Lanka is set to implement legal gambling next year.

He said the rapid growth in Singapore would not threaten Macau’s position, saying the former Portuguese colony has seen “dramatic growth in almost every measurable category,” after it opened its doors to foreign competition.

But he urged Macau to deal with labor shortage and infrastructure issues, as well as a cap of 5,500 gaming tables allowed before 2013, which could dampen growth.
Macau’s gaming scene was monopolized by tycoon Stanley Ho for decades until it opened to foreign competition in 2002. Since then, a stream of Las Vegas-based gaming companies has flooded into the southern Chinese city.

Gambling revenue in Macau, the only place in China where casinos are legal, surged to a new record in May with a 42 percent jump year on year at 24.31 billion patacas ($3 billion) – a record high for the fourth month in a row.

“Macau should continue to benefit from strong momentum after the successful opening of Galaxy Macau casino, which is driving visitations,” JP Morgan said in reference to the city’s newest resort casino, according to Dow Jones Newswires.

Both Casinos employs more than 20,000 people.

“Pinoy Sunday” Showing in Singapore

PINOY SUNDAY is not a typical Taiwanese film. Firstly, it plays out primarily in Tagalog, with only occasional snippets of dialogue spoken in Taiwanese, Mandarin or English. Secondly, it maintains a fairly light-hearted tone, telling a simple story of Filipino migrant workers without feeling compelled to get bogged down in social commentary or berate the injustices of an unfair society. Instead, Malaysian-born writer-director Ho Wi Ding lets his film ride for the most part on the shoulders of his two lead actors - Jeffrey "Epy" Quizon and Bayani Agbayani - a task they effortlessly accomplish through their natural charisma and frequently hilarious onscreen chemistry.

Dado (Agbayani) is living a lifestyle endured by migrant workers the world over. He has left his wife and young daughter back in The Philippines to come to Taipei and work on an assembly line. He sends as much money home as he can to provide his loved ones the best life possible, even if he's not there to share it with them. And that's the problem. Dado's been away for so long that he has, despite himself, begun a relationship with Anna (Meryll Soriano), who works as a domestic helper.
 
Manuel, on the other hand, is a carefree romantic with no such family ties or financial responsibilities. He's a good-looking guy and applies his energy to chasing girls, although his latest target - club singer Celia (Alessandra de Rossi) - is proving frustratingly nonplussed by his advances. Dado and Manuel both live in a dormitory provided by their employer, but it upholds a strict curfew, keeping them indoors for most of their free time. Manuel dreams of furnishing their rooftop hangout with a sofa, where they can drink beers under the stars and shoot the breeze - but neither of them can afford such a luxury.
 
On their day off, however, the pair happens upon a recently discarded sofa sitting outside an apartment building and, although many miles from home with no means of transportation, they commit themselves to hiking it back to the dorm. And so begins a hilarious journey, brimming with incidents and pitfalls that over the course of the day will push Dado and Manuel's friendship to its breaking point.

Karylle takes lead role in new musical show “The Kitchen Musical”

Actress-singer Karylle Tatlonghari is now the lead star of Asian series titled "The Kitchen Musical."

In an interview during the press conference on Monday for the said series, Karylle clarified reports that the series is patterned after US hit musical series "Glee."

Filipino talents shine once more as ABS-CBN stars Karylle, Christian Baustista and Joseph "Thou" Reyes topbill the first pan-Asian television musical drama series, The Kitchen Musical, an original production by The Group Entertainment.

"There was a time in the world that musical was the format of movie, that was actually different kinds of movies kunwari West Side Story was a musical, Annie was a musical maraming ganon dati it's just that ngayon ay hindi na kasi siya uso. Kaya the other musical that you can compare it with is Glee," Karylle said.

Karylle, whose first acting role was "Little Mermaid" in 2000, said that she's happy that musical shows is finally back and being embraced by viewers.

"Well of course we are happy that this kind of format is back, like the same way that reality TV is a format, the same way that cooking show is also different format, parang genre kumbaga," Karylle said.

On Sunday, she will leave the country and will stay in Singapore for 4 months to do "The Kitchen Musical," the first ever pan-Asian television musical drama series.

The series is an original production by The Group Entertainment and it is set to launch in the country on Studio 23 and in 19 countries across Asia  this October.

"The Kitchen Musical" will be served in 13 one-hour episodes and will tell the story of a rich girl fresh out of culinary school in Paris who embarks on a journey of self-discovery when she starts working for the Avilon, her father's restaurant.

In the show, Karylle will play the lead female character Madeline.

Also part of the Asian show are Filipino artists Ikey Canoy, Thou Reyes, and Christian Bautista.

Bye Showtime

In the interview, Karylle also expressed that she will miss her hosting job for ABS-CBN's "Showtime."

"They are so sweet talaga. Sobra akong overwhelmed sa sweetness. I was able to talk to them pero hindi ako nakapag ba-bye talaga," Karylle said adding: "Mami-miss ko talaga kasi iba ang bonding doon unlike other shows kami we are there from start to finish, kami nandoon nagkukuwentuhan kami, parang school yung masyado ka ng attached sa kanila," she said.

Karylle said that she will definitely bid goodbye to her "Showtime" family before flying to Singapore.

Karylle excited to work in Singapore for “The Kitchen Musical”

Apart from being one of its lead actors, Karylle is excited to work in Singapore for “The Kitchen Musical” because their work hours are manageable.

“I’m very excited to work there because 12 working hours lang po [kami per day]. And na-experience ko na 'yung 24 hours ang norm and 40 hours ang worst,” Karylle told Bulletin Entertainment and other members of the press during the press launch for “The Kitchen Musical” held on May 30 at Ace Water Spa.

“Tamang oras 'yung trabaho, 7 [AM] to 7 [PM]. There’s so much time for other things, to explore, to write, to run,” she noted.

Asked if the 12-hour work day is in writing, Karylle said yes. “Di ba ang galing? Pwede pala,” she added.

With that, Karylle expressed hope that this “will somehow wake up the industry here na, you know, just to lessen the working hours a bit.”

“Because, you know, if you complain even the slightest bit here on your 24th hour, you’re a diva. But as we all know, 24 hours is no joke. So sana lang naman din na we learn from first-world countries, you know, we can get there also,” she said.

Asked about a rumor circulating on Facebook that she had a fever and just came from a 30-hour long shoot when she went to audition for “The Kitchen Musical,” Karylle confirmed so. “I was coughing a bit and I had to take some medicines but okay naman.”

She added: “I can’t remember about how [long the shoot was]… I think we were taping for ‘Magkano Ang Iyong Dangal’ but I don’t know how long the taping was. Siguro merong 24 hours ‘yon.”

Aside from Karylle, three more Filipinos – namely Christian Bautista, Thou Reyes and Ikey Canoy – are joining the Asian cast of the series by Singaporean director and creator, CheeK.  Set to leave for Singapore this week, the four will join the rest of the Asian cast and “will be subjected to actual food preparation training [so] you can be sure that all the things that they will be doing on the screen will be pretty realistic,” said Nelia Molato-Sutrisno, CEO of Singapore’s The Group Entertainment.

"We will be identifying the other nationalities who will be joining in the cast as we confirm them," Nelia added.

Karylle will be playing the role of Maddie, a young sous chef at The Avilon. Christian will be Daniel, another sous chef at the restaurant and Maddie’s best friend and “secret rival.” Meanwhile, Ikey will be assuming the role of the “eccentric” and “often misunderstood” pastry chef named Winston; on the other hand, Thou, who was originally cast as a dishwasher, got an “upgrade” and will now be playing the role of one of the chefs.

Other Pinoys who will join “The Kitchen Musical” are New York-based actor Arthur Acuna as The Avilon’s general manager, and conductor Gerard Salonga who will be the TV show’s musical director.

In selecting the cast members, Nelia explained that they embarked on a regional casting where they “looked for talents all over Asia for the pilot.”

“And we brought the pilot around not only in Asia but also outside, [to] Europe and the States.

“From that pilot, we got comments and from those comments we finalized the cast for the actual shoot, which will happen starting this month,” she said, adding that they’ve been developing this project for almost a year now.

For Karylle, working for four straight months in Singapore without going home is “better” because “you [remain] in character, there’s no distraction, everything is efficient.”

“[It’s] very professional so for me, of course I’d like to go home, and hopefully we will be able to, but if not, 'yung talaga kasi 'yung pinaka-professional way of doing things,” she added.

Christian, on the other hand, said he’s already set to return at least once to Manila, for a day, to attend the premiere of his upcoming Indonesian film, “A Special Symphony,” where he plays the role of a music teacher working in a special school.

Both “ASAP” mainstays shared that they had to either give up or move certain commitments just to make way for “The Kitchen Musical,” including Karylle’s stage play “Light at the Piazza,” which is now rescheduled for next year.

“We’re devoted to this, we believe in this project and there are sacrifices pero that’s what we have to do,” Christian said.

All four artists agreed that they’d grab other possible opportunities abroad that may come their way, but in the meantime, they see working in “The Kitchen Musical” as a chance to open doors for other Filipino talents.

“What we can assure you, kaming apat, we are gonna put the Philippines there. We’re gonna make them see that we are professionals, we are good and easy to work with.

“We will do everything we can para ‘pag napanood na ‘to ng iba’t-ibang bansa, [they’ll say] ‘Who are these four? Where are they from?’ They’re from the Philippines. We wanna bring the Philippines… to the rest of the world. That’s our promise to you,” Christian said.

Asked what the audience will love about “The Kitchen Musical,” Ikey said, “It’s so much more than ‘Glee’ na yes may singing, may dancing, may acting but the big part of what the show really is is about cooking, is about cuisine, is about food.”

“We’ll show them also kung ano 'yung treatment nila, how to present food and how to get people interested not only in life and food, but in cooking, in baking, and making what you see in the show. Kasi lahat ng mga dishes na pinapakita namin every episode, we will be showing you how to make them,” he added, with Karylle describing the series as “a fusion of music and also a cooking show.”

On the music that will be featured on the show, Nelia said they have opted to get popular songs familiar both locally and internationally -- no Pinoy and original songs, though -- due to the wide scope of market they are targeting.

“We got the clearance already, na-clear na namin ang music rights with the international labels. So all the songs that you will be encountering in the series are all familiar. We will be doing a lot of rearrangements and you will see the songs, the normal songs that you know, in a very different light. Specially the way these talented artists are actually going to perform them,” she shared.

Nelia also added that, like “Glee,” they also have plans of having these songs recorded by “The Kitchen Musical” cast available for download.

“The digital part of 'The Kitchen Musical' is now being put together. Part of the strategy is how we can actually bring the songs to the mass[es] as soon as possible. There will be [downloading component]. There will be an online [and] mobile component,” said she.

“The Kitchen Musical” is slated to premiere in October 2011 in 19 countries across Asia and Europe, with the first two episodes to air locally initially via ABS-CBN’s "Sunday’s Best." The subsequent episodes will be aired tentatively every Saturday on Studio 23 in its primetime block.

In all, there will be 13 one hour-long episodes for the first season and, according to Studio 23’s program head Vince Rodriguez, the second season of "The Kitchen Musical" is already "in the works."

Singapore launches Super Yacht Show at Sentosa

Singapore has taken a major step towards becoming the Monaco of the East, with the launch of the inaugural Singapore Yacht Show. This makes the island only the third city, after Monaco and Abu Dhabi, to stage both the F1 Grand Prix and the super yacht show.

Twelve luxury yachts are part of the line-up for the inaugural show at One Degree 15 in Sentosa. From a stunning 57-metre motor-sailor with huge masts to a traditionally-built sailing yacht, for a more nostalgic feel.

The organisers put the show together at short notice and showed that they could deliver.

Andy Treadwell, Managing Director of the Informa Yacht Group, said: "Three months is absolutely not enough time to organise a proper yacht show.

"But for lots of reasons to do with our stakeholders and our own take on the need to launch a show now means that we have done it and we are very pleased. Lots of interest and looking forward to a really fantastic show in 2012."

The fledgling super yacht industry is set to create spin-offs for other supporting services.

Arthur Tay, Chairman of One Degree 15 Marina Club, said: "Retrofitting, interiors, F&B, sales of the boats, some of the conference things like cruising grounds, tourism aspects all have a part to play with this."

The three-day event was officially opened by the Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry, S. Iswaran, who said that Singapore has the potential to be the "third destination" for super yacht owners, after the Mediterranean and Caribbean.

It looks smooth sailing for this industry, with 81 unique super yacht visits to Singapore last year, a five-fold increase from 2006. And that is why this show is looking at doubling the number of boats to 25 for the 2012 edition.

6th Ngee Ann Photographic Exhibition

If you’re into arts and photography, then you still have time to visit this exhibit.

This annual exhibition showcases more than 200 works by professional and amateur photographers, with a special feature on Mr Bey Hua Heng, Photographer of the Year 2011. Mr Bey, recipient of the 1993 Young Artist Award (Photography), will exhibit his recent shots of Nepal.

The Young Artist Award was introduced in 1992 to encourage the development of young artistic talents in Singapore. The award is accorded to young artists aged 35 years and below in the year of award, who have shown promise of artistic excellence in the fields of literary arts, performing arts, visual arts and film.

To date, the Young Artist Award has been conferred on 106 recipients.

It's done, Pacquiao vs. Mosley fight will happen on May 7 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas

 

Bob Arum and Shane Mosley said it’s a go, the fight with Manny Pacquiao on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

But Pacquiao’s adviser, Mike Koncz, said they’re still tying some loose ends, and that the Filipino superstar will make his final decision after the holidays.

“A hundred percent it’s going to be Mosley. But we’re not yet where we want to be,” said Koncz.

Pacquiao must be trying to spice up the contents of the contract before he finally says yes.

“But we’re not too far,” said Koncz who also spoke to fanhouse.com and said, “We have yet to hear from Mr. Arum. I haven’t reached out to him and he hasn’t reached out to me. It’s the holidays, and we’re in no rush. We’ll speak to Arum shortly in the next few days and make our final decision probably by the new year,” said Koncz.

“When Bob Arum was here (in the Philippines), certainly Mr. Mosley consumed most of the time during our conversations, and that would mean that he got the bulk of our attention. But that doesn’t mean that we picked him. Most of our time was spent discussing Shane Mosley, however, it was also asked that Bob Arum return to Las Vegas with a counter proposal.”

Mosley, who’s pushing 40 but has vowed to give Pacquiao a good fight, and probably knock him out, told fighthype.com that it’s a done deal.

“It’s a go. Bob (Arum) and (his representative) James (Prince) came to an agreement on the money minutes ago. Bob is drawing up the contracts and I will sign either on Wednesday or Thursday,” said the pride of Pomona, California.

Arum said he wants everything done and over with as soon as possible because he has to work on the dates, the promotion and the press tour that should take both fighters to Los Angeles, New York, Washington and San Francisco.

Arum said there would be a stop in Washington because US Senator Harry Reid is setting up a rare meeting between Pacquiao and the US President, Barack Obama.

“The President wants to see Manny,” said Arum.

The meeting between the two of the world’s most powerful figures was supposed to take place right after Pacquiao’s fight with Antonio Margarito last November.

In fact, a private plane was already on standby to take Pacquiao from San Francisco, where he was then having a concert, to Washington. But it was called off because Obama “had to fly somewhere.”

Arum said he expects a tough fight for Pacquiao, who will face Mosley at 147 or 148 lb.

“We came to a meeting of the minds,” Arum told ESPN.com about his meeting with Prince in Las Vegas.

“[Top Rank matchmaker] Bruce Trample says it’s a very difficult fight. I believe it will be an exciting fight. Shane knows how to fight and how to deal with the speed. Manny is in for a hellacious fight. I really believe styles make fights,” Arum said.

Mosley said he’ll knock Pacquiao out.

“Come on, man. I’m a bigger guy than him and he gets hit. And you saw how I hurt Floyd. Manny is going to come forward and I will hit him on the chin at some point. His defense is not like Floyd’s. Manny will come at me, and I will knock him out,” he told ESPN.com.

But it’s not a hundred percent that’s going to happen.
