Singapore Police have arrested a 49 year-old man who is believed to be responsible for a series of shop thefts at retail pharmacies and supermarkets island-wide.
Between August and October 2010, several cases of shop thefts were reported at retail pharmacies and supermarkets at Woodlands, Chua Chu Kang and Pasir Ris. Items stolen included medication, health supplements and tonics. A task force comprising officers from Woodlands and Pasir Ris NPC were formed to investigate the cases. The officers worked closely with the various retail pharmacies and viewed all the relevant CCTV footage. Their efforts paid off when they managed to establish the identity of the suspect from one of the CCTV recordings. With this crucial lead, the officers mounted several operations to apprehend the suspect but he remained elusive. Nonetheless, security officers at retail outlets and supermarkets were also alerted to look out for the suspect.
On 26 Oct 2010, Police received a tip off that the suspect was spotted at Woodlands Plaza. Officers from the task force immediately responded and managed to apprehend the suspect at about 8.30pm .
The suspect will be charged in Court No. 26 of the Subordinate Court on 28 Oct 2010 for Shop Theft under Section 380 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, he may be sentenced to an imprisonment for a term which may extend to 7 years, and shall also be liable to fine.
